(SDI), A Woman Owned Small Business, a privately held California Corporation has been in existence since 1964.  We occupy two facilities with over 40,000 square feet.  SDI employs over 80 people.  We serve military and commercial avionics and marine and ground-based platforms.  SDI’s resources include a fully equipped CNC and manual machine shop, laser/photo chemical etching, paint and toning facilities, component and final assembly cells, printed circuit board, harness, and lighting assembly capabilities, as well as a functional clean room to custom cut resize COTS LCD glass.

Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer

  

Description

Produce electro-mechanical engineering designs and modifications by analyzing project requirements; researching and developing electro-mechanical engineering techniques and approaches; validating and verifying designs; supporting project implementation.

 

 Duties and Responsibilities

  • Determine electro-mechanical design requirements, objectives and priorities, using input from customers and evaluating similar and related products.

  • Organize design project by identifying short-term and long-term requirements, preparing schedules, cost estimates, and required resources.

  • Develop electro-mechanical designs by researching, analyzing, selecting, and applying advanced engineering tools (CAD software); preparing diagrams, schematics, and drawings using Computer Aided Design software; collaborating with related design teams, evaluating components, materials and suppliers; identifying and resolving design integration/interface and manufacturability issues; determining and establishing design specifications and safety standards.

  • Verify and validate electro-mechanical design performance by establishing reliability, maintainability and durability test standards; building and testing prototypes; performing debugging procedures; conducting compatibility evaluations; analyzing test data, identifying, isolating, and resolving performance problems.

  • Document design by recording electro-mechanical design features, functions, and operational requirements; specifying operational training, detailing safety and support requirements.

  • Maintain design team accomplishments by coordinating activities; obtaining expert input; reviewing open issues and action items; contributing informational and electro-mechanical analysis to team meetings and reports; guiding technicians.

  • Provide sustaining support by offering technical support; troubleshooting and resolving production problems related to electro-mechanical design.

  • Actively support the Quality Improvement System.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Requires a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and related work experience.

  • 7+ years of relevant design experience.

  • Knowledge of electronic systems, electronic production and optical technologies.

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop and/or AutoDesk Inventor design software.

  • Analytical tools - ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule format.

  • Strong background with system level electro-mechanical design.

  • Experience with "integrally illuminated panels and keyboard design" and MIL-P-7788 (AS7788) a plus.

  • Hands-on problem solving skills.

  • Experience in a fast track (fast paced, fast to market) design to production environment.

Sr. Electrical Engineer

 

Description

Hands-on designer responsible for electrical design of Display products sub-assemblies.  Will produce engineering designs and modifications by analyzing project requirements; researching and developing electro-mechanical engineering techniques and approaches; validating and verifying designs; supporting project implementation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Determine electrical design requirements, objectives and priorities, using input from customers and evaluating similar and related products.
  • Plan projects by analyzing customer requirements, establishing solution implementation and conferring and collaborating with other members of engineering group.
  • Organize design project by identifying short-term and long-term requirements, preparing schedules, cost estimates and required resources.
  • Develop electro-mechanical designs by researching, analyzing, selecting and applying advanced engineering tools (CAD and Inventor software); preparing diagrams, schematics and drawings using Computer Aided Design software and Inventory Software; collaborating with related design teams; evaluating components, materials and suppliers; identifying and resolving design integration/interface and manufacturability issues; determining and establishing design specifications and safety standards.

  • Requires a B.S. degree in Electronic Engineering inclusive of the development of firmware/software, with direct applicable experience in the design of displays, microcontroller and video circuits.
  • 12+ years of progressive experience and increasing responsibility combined in product development and manufacturing.
  • Strong background with system level electro-mechanical design.
  • Hands-on problem solving skills.
  • Experience in a fast track (fast paced, fast to market) design to production environment.

Sr. Paint Specialist

 

Description

Senior-level technical lead position responsible for supporting department work activities and spearheading process improvement and modernization efforts of the paint department. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the general work activities of the department; sanding, prepping, masking, painting, screen-printing, photo-etching, lamination, and laser marking of panels, bezels, keyboards, and displays for avionics applications.
  • Research and evaluate new processes and technologies to enhance and replace current ones in order to reduce costs, shorten cycle time, increase first time yield and minimize rework and scrap.
  • Review engineering documentation for process accuracy on current and new design releases.
  • Provide sustaining support by offering technical assistance, troubleshooting and resolving production problems related to painting.
  • Actively support the Quality Improvement System.

 Skills and Qualifications

  • 9+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Have a clear understanding of engineering drawings.  Capable of understanding and following "process".
  • Skillful at the basic activities of cleaning, masking, and accurate paint application and detailing of acrylic and metal parts.
  • Knowledge of spray painting and various paint types.
  • Mix chemicals and paints from specification processes and sheets.
  • Capable of making tooling for photo-etching various parts.
  • Experienced with screen-printing processes and equipment.
  • Hands-on problem solving skills.
  • Experience in a fast track (fast paced, fast to market) design to production environment.
